There’s no doubt about it – your nails are now just as much of a fashion statement as your clothes and, just as in fashion, you need to stay on top of what’s hot and what’s not.
With so many nail-art bloggers and Instagrammers out there, following the latest trends in nails is easier than ever and quite often you can achieve the looks yourself simply by watching online tutorials. Not sure where to start? Here are 5 top looks for nails that will put the focus on your fingertips.
1. Make a Statement
Using stencils to put letters on your fingertips makes a big statement! While you’re obviously limited to words of ten letters or less, this trend is showing up on in the Instagram accounts of some of the hottest young celebs and looks like it might stick around for a while. Make your words as cryptic or obvious as you want – either way, you’ll be sure of getting a conversation started!
2. Red is all the Rage
Sporting blood red nails makes for a dramatic look and you can avoid this old-school color looking dated by using it in some ‘out-of-the-box’ ways. While long, pointed red nails scream glamour, it’s not a look favored by the younger crowd who rock the scarlet shades on shorter lengths.
Another way to update the color is to just add a stripe of red, either horizontally or vertically, or go for a tone that’s more subdued for a subtler style.
3. Half-Moon Mania
While most of us focus on the nail tips, bringing attention to the cuticle is totally on trend. Painting the half moon at the bed of the nail gives a surprising twist to the classic French manicure and you can take it one step further by using glitter or jewels.
Placing bling at the bottom of nail is more practical too and likely to last longer than when it’s at the upper end.
4. Pack a Punch
One of the strangest, but amazingly powerful look for nails right now is the ‘hole-punch’. Take note – fake nails are a must for this style and should probably be done by a professional for the best results! Just as the name suggests, this involves long nails, usually painted in a strong tone, sporting a perfectly round hole near the tip, just as you’d get with a hole punch. While this look might not be for everyone, it could be a fun and funky style to try when you really want to turn heads.
5. Oh, Ombre!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that ombre is everywhere and now you can include nails to that list. Just as with hair, the ombre look is totally versatile and can be achieved in a whole range of different colors and tones.
For DIY-ers, mastering the ombre look may take a little practice but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s an easy way to give the nails a unique look that works on all shapes.
The best thing about nail art is that it’s a low cost, commitment-free way to add style and fun to your look and can be switched up as quickly as the trends change!
